Getting Around
Mauritania is a vast country — understanding how to move between its remote wonders is part of the adventure.

How to get around
Mauritania's infrastructure is minimal by design — most desert roads are unsealed tracks, and distances between destinations are significant. Here is what to expect.

Private 4×4
All Mauritania Beyond tours include a private 4×4 vehicle with an experienced local driver. This is the only practical way to access the desert interior — Terjit oasis, Azoueiga dunes, Ouadane, and the remote Adrar plateau all require off-road travel.
Our vehicles are maintained specifically for the terrain and carry emergency supplies, extra fuel, and water. Your driver doubles as a desert navigator who has crossed these routes hundreds of times.

The Iron Ore Train
One of the most extraordinary travel experiences on Earth. The train runs from the iron ore mines at Zouerate to the port of Nouadhibou — over 700 km of open desert — making it one of the longest and heaviest freight trains in the world.
Travelers board at Choum, after lunch in Atar. The journey takes approximately 12–16 hours overnight, arriving in Nouadhibou in the morning. We provide sleeping bags, warm clothing packing tips, and all necessary equipment for the ride.

Airport Transfers
All tours begin and end at Nouakchott Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC). We arrange pickup on Day 1 and drop-off on the final evening — no logistics to worry about on either end.
Most international flights connect through Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc), Paris (Air France), or Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). Direct flights from Europe do exist but are seasonal.
If your tour ends in Nouadhibou (after the Iron Train), we arrange an internal flight or road transfer back to Nouakchott for your departure — this is included in the Grand Discovery package.
Checkpoints
Interior police & military checkpoints
The desert interior has numerous police and military checkpoints — a routine part of travel in Mauritania. Officers check passports and registration for every vehicle and passenger.
We prepare 10 passport copies per person in advance and our drivers handle every checkpoint interaction. You stay in the vehicle. The process takes 2–5 minutes per stop and is completely routine.
What to have ready
- →Original passport (keep on your person at all times)
- →Approved e-visa (digital copy on your phone is fine)
- →Passport copies are prepared by us — 10 per person
- →Relax — your guide handles all communication
